The rules of local SEO shifted hard in 2025. Google AI Overviews now answer most "near me" queries before users ever scroll. If you're not in the top 3 sources, you don't exist.
01. Google Business Profile is Your #1 Asset
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is now more important than your website for local search. A fully optimized GBP with weekly posts, photos, and Q&A responses signals active ownership to Google's algorithm. Businesses that update their GBP weekly get 4x more direction requests than those that don't.
Fill out every single field. Categories, service areas, hours, products, services. Google uses this structured data to power AI Overview answers. If it's not in your GBP, AI won't cite you.
02. Reviews Are a Ranking Signal Now
Google uses review velocity, sentiment, and keyword frequency inside reviews as ranking signals. Ask customers to mention the specific service and city in their review. "Best HVAC repair in Charlotte" inside a review carries real weight.
Respond to every review within 48 hours. Businesses that respond to reviews rank higher in Maps. It signals engagement and trust to the algorithm.
Pro Tactic
Set up a QR code at your checkout or on your business card that goes directly to your Google review link. Remove all friction. Customers who scan and land on the review page complete the review 3x more often than those asked via email.
03. Schema Markup Feeds AI Overviews
AI Overviews pull structured data from your website—not your GBP. LocalBusiness schema, FAQPage schema, and Service schema tell Google's AI exactly what you do, where you do it, and what it costs. Without it, you're invisible to the AI layer.
Every page targeting a local service should have a LocalBusiness JSON-LD block with your address, phone, service area, and hours. This is table stakes in 2026.
04. City-Specific Landing Pages Still Win
A single homepage targeting "plumber Charlotte NC" won't beat a dedicated landing page for "emergency plumber South Charlotte" when someone searches that exact phrase. City-specific pages let you target long-tail local keywords that have less competition and higher intent.
Build a page per service per city. It sounds like a lot—but that's the structure Google rewards. A custom Next.js site makes this scalable with dynamic routing.
