
Google Business Profile is 100% free and it's often the first thing a local customer sees before your website. Most businesses set it up halfway. Here's how to do it right.
01. Claim and Verify Your Profile
Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it. Google will mail you a postcard with a verification code or verify via phone/video. Don't skip this — unverified profiles rank much lower and can't be fully edited.
02. Fill Out Every Single Field
Most businesses fill in their name, phone, and hours — and stop. That's not enough. Google uses every field to decide what searches to show you for. Fill in:
Pick the most specific one that fits you
Add every city you actually serve
Add each service with its own description
750 characters — use keywords naturally
Exterior, interior, team, and work photos
Add your own questions and answer them
03. Post Weekly
Google Posts are like mini social media posts that appear directly on your Google listing. Post at least once a week — a recent job, a seasonal offer, or a tip. Businesses that post weekly get more clicks. It's that simple.
04. Get Reviews — Then Respond to All of Them
Reviews are a direct ranking factor. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy — send them a direct link to your review page. When they leave a review (good or bad), respond within 48 hours. Google watches engagement. Businesses that respond to reviews outrank those that don't.
How to Get Your Review Link
Go to your Google Business Profile dashboard → click "Ask for reviews" → copy the short link. Put it in your email signature, text it to customers after every job, and add it to your invoices.
05. Keep Your Info Consistent Everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number must be identical on Google, Yelp, Facebook, your website, and every other directory. Any variation confuses Google and drops your ranking. This is called NAP consistency — Name, Address, Phone.
